It’s a fair question, and the honest answer is: it depends. Some robot mower installations are perfectly manageable as a DIY project. Others benefit significantly from professional installation, and some are genuinely best left to someone who does this regularly.
What DIY installation involves
For wire-guided models, DIY installation means measuring and laying the boundary wire yourself, positioning the charging station, installing any guide wires, and configuring the mowing schedule via the app or panel. The manufacturers produce reasonable installation guides and the materials are generally supplied in the box.
For GPS-guided models like the Husqvarna NERA or EGO AURA, installation is simpler: there’s no wire to lay, just virtual boundary mapping via the app and physical charging station placement. This is more feasible as a self-installation.
Where DIY installations go wrong
The most common issues we see when taking over a self-installed system are:
- Boundary wire laid too close to the surface (gets damaged by the mower or general garden activity)
- Guide wire positioned incorrectly (the mower struggles to find the station reliably)
- Charging station placed in a location that causes docking issues
- Multiple separate lawn areas wired incorrectly (common with gardens that have passages between zones)
- Loop resistance too high because the wire run is too long without correction
None of these are catastrophic, but they’re all frustrating, and they tend to manifest as intermittent problems that are difficult to diagnose without knowing what to look for.
When professional installation is worth it
- Your lawn is large (over 1000m²) or has multiple separate zones
- There’s significant gradient involved
- You have narrow passages or a complex boundary layout
- The charging station position requires careful thought
- You’d rather it work perfectly from day one than spend time troubleshooting
Our view
We’d always recommend professional installation for anything beyond a simple, flat, single-zone lawn. The cost is modest relative to the total investment, and it makes a real difference to how well the system performs long-term.
That said, we’re not going to tell you it’s mandatory. If you have a straightforward small lawn and you’re comfortable with the DIY process, the manufacturers’ guides are adequate.
